It’s back-to-school time. After the summer’s trade shows, gatherings, and detours, the workshop doors are reopening, the machines are picking up their rhythm again, and the hammers are ringing out once more. For this issue, we’ve chosen to take you back to where it all begins: to those workshops where materials are transformed, where ideas take shape, and where, year after year, the great stories of cutlery are forged. Because behind every remarkable knife, there is always a man, a woman, a skill, a standard… and a lot of hard work.
Passion as a Driving Force
Lasting success in the cutlery industry is never a matter of chance. It takes talent, of course, but also patience, perseverance, and the ability to constantly challenge oneself. Laurent Gaillard is a prime example of this. A cutler for over thirty years, he has weathered the challenges of a sometimes unpredictable market without ever giving up. Today, his experience and generosity—especially toward young cutlers—make him a key figure in the trade. Along with Tom Popplert and Wim Werner, we also discover two other personalities whose worlds are unlike any others.
From Sketch to Finished Piece
Creating a knife is also a process of reflection, research, and knowledge-sharing. Pierre Reverdy takes us step by step through the creation of an exceptional piece, the “Phare de l’île.” Peter Johnsson, a Swedish swordsmith, invites us to look at the creative process from a different angle, drawing on the traces left by history. And because a workshop would be nothing without its tools, we take a closer look at the drop hammer—this impressive machine that has become an integral part of the world of blacksmithing.
The Knife in All Its Forms
This issue isn’t limited to workshops. We’re also taking a look at those who carry on the cutler’s craft. VD Cuir shows us just how important the sheath is, crafted with the same precision and dedication as the knife it accompanies.
