Châtellerault: a rare page in cutlery history

French cutlery boasts an exceptional heritage, shaped by centuries of expertise and craftsmanship. Behind the pieces that stand the test of time lie fascinating stories, sometimes documented, sometimes shrouded in mystery and legend.
Among these stories is that of Châtellerault, a singular page in the history of French cutlery. Although only a few examples of haute coutellerie remain today, these pieces are true heritage treasures. Those featured in this issue 168 are unique in the world, and testify to the existence of exceptional workshops that have profoundly marked French cutlery history, alongside a large production of more common knives.

Sharing points of view

Today, preserving this heritage is essential if it is to continue to support today’s craftsmen and inspire future generations. With this in mind, several cutlers were invited to share their vision and thoughts on what needs to be done to reassure enthusiasts, support craftsmen and maintain the passion that drives this world.

Spring news, discoveries and tests

As in every issue, we also bring you a roundup of cutlery news, with a selection of buying ideas and a look back at the early spring 2026 trade shows. This time, @fandecouteaux’s favorites feature the remarkable creations of Chinese manufacturer WE Knife, in particular its exceptional collaboration with David Lespect. The Conso feature is devoted to gardening hatchets, with several models tested to help everyone make their choice, before a more in-depth look at the famous Gränsfors Bruk axe brand.

Exceptional craftsmen and techniques

This issue also invites you to discover a variety of subjects combining history, technique and craftsmanship: an exceptional piece preserved in the Solingen Museum, the different mechanisms of folding knives, Paulo Simoës’ advice on making leather sheaths, or the links between tattooing and passion for cutlery. We also meet craftsmen with singular backgrounds, such as Dominique Chevallet, Honoré Vilain and Martin Claudel, before exploring the history of sailors’ knives with Pierre-Yves Javel. Finally, our “Métiers d’Art” feature opens the doors to the world’s only cane factory, where each creation is a veritable work of art.
